How to Wash Your Hair

It’s a stupid question for most people for me to ask,”Do you wash your hair?” Duh of course most people shower and therefore wash their hair. But is it important as to how to wash your hair? Some experts think so. “Applying proper hair washing techniques lets you ensure that you don’t damage your hair and follicles,” says Monica Davis, a professional hairstylist. It will also make sure you don’t harm the skin on your scalp. 1

Choosing the right shampoo

Why is the right shampoo important? Why? Not all hair is the same because each person has unique hair from everyone else. So what one needs depends on the person. Here are some of my recommendations as to what can help you.

  1. Blond/graying/silver hair - purple shampoo applied weekly really it helps with the tone and it neutralizes the color. At Avon we have Elastine Salon De Color-Vibe Purple Shampoo.

  2. Fine hair - Can you barely see each hair follicle? Then you need a clarifying shampoo and that will help thicken your hair. For that I recommend Avon Elastine PropoliThera Volumizing Shampoo

  3. Thick or Coarse hair - this type really needs a shampoo with a moisturizing element to it. Dr. Groot Microbiome Scalp Fortifying Hair Thickening Shampoo will help with this.

  4. Colored Hair - It needs to account for your hair being colored which means it’s gentle. CHI® Essentials Replenishing Shampoo is perfect for such a need.

The Purpose of Conditioner

I started asking about the purpose and value of shampoo when a family member starting telling me that conditioner isn’t needed at all. It was when I had to defend myself that I started thinking about it. So what’s the point? First let’s start with defining what is conditioner?  Cond
itioner is a conditioning or moisturizing treatment made up of oils, nutrients, humectants, emollients, and surfactants. 2 To put it simply, after shampoo cleans and removes oils, conditioner reintroduces moisture back into your hair and helps to smooth your strands for a shiny, soft, healthy finish. It is kind of like how you wash your face and then apply moisturizer. A conditioner is essentially a moisturizer that is designed for your hair. It adds moisture and protects your hair from damage and split ends. 2

While it’s certainly nice to use conditioner there are good reasons for not using it. In certain places you may not need the moisture from the conditioner also it depends on how hard your water is. If there is harder water then you will more likely need conditioner. Below I have listed some recommendations that go along with the shampoo options.

  1. Grey, blonde or graying hair Elastine Salon de color vibe - purple conditioner

  2. Fine hair -  Avon Elastine PropoliThera Volumizing Conditioner

  3. Colored Hair - CHI® Essentials Replenishing Conditioner

Steps I Take to do it

There are a myriad of recommendations on how to do it. Online there are many articles, videos and so on that talk about this topic and they all have some differences and similarities and it seems like they are all fine to use. This is what I do and as I said, whatever works for you.

  1. Get your hair wet and rinse it. - work your hands through your hair but you aren’t massaging it.

  2. Massage your scalp. - slowly go through your scalp by massaging with your fingers. This helps the conditioner to be more effective.

  3. Apply shampoo at the tips of your hair and work up - This seemed counterintuitive to me as I used to start at my scalp but doing it gets all the oil so on out more thoroughly.

  4. Rinse

  5. Apply and Rinse again if needed

  6. Apply Conditioner and rinse - Application of conditioner is the same as applying shampoo.

So that’s it for this article. I hope it helps. Tell me in the comment section if it did and your thoughts are most welcome. Thanks for your time. 😀
